Ichishkíin (Sahaptin) is offered through the Department of Linguistics with support from the Northwest Indian Language Institute. The focus of this course is on learning Ichishkíin and learning the culture and history of the Ichishkíin (Sahaptin) peoples. Ichishkíin is currently spoken on the Yakama Nation, the Confederated Tribes of the Warm Springs Reservation, and the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation. The dialects are mutually intelligible, with only slight differences in spelling and words, and Ichishkíin cultures are closely related; some of the dialect differences will be addressed in class. Sahaptin languages are critically endangered, and this course adds to language preservation efforts. Student projects will contribute to the ongoing efforts to revitalize the language. The course will be of interest to students wanting to understand more about Northwest Native history and cultures, or who want an opportunity to study and understand a language radically different from English.
